Charity Event with Miss MalaysiaIndian Global 2008

Hey guys,

'Bake for Charity' is driven by the Co-founder of Velvet Vintage. This is part of her community service project as Miss MalaysiaIndian Global 2008.

She has partnered first runner-up Sowmya Krishnan to teach 3 women and 1 man, all of whom are mentally disabled.

They will be teaching them how to bake muffins and cakes to support themselves.

The muffins will be sold at Central Market in a bazaar on the 3rd of May and proceeds will go to the Kiwanis Job Training Center as well as the Human Trafficking Workshop fund.

The Chocolate Cake's will be sold at RM 25 per half kg and delivered to Mother's in conjunction with Mothers Day.

Orders for chocolate cakes are now welcomed.

Do help support this cause and maybe your RM25 could save someone from being duped into Human Trafficking!

Herbs and How To's - Cinnamon

Cinnamon is the inner bark of an evergreen tree. The plant grows anywhere between 10 – 15 meters tall and is native to Sri Lanka.

It is quite pungent in taste yet it gives out a cool and spicy effect. It is often used as a condiment in an assortment of foods ranging from curries to cakes, as well as tea, cocoa and liqueurs.

It has been used to treat diarrhea and problems related to the digestive system. Cinnamon is high in antioxidants and antimicrobial properties which can aid in the preservation of certain foods.

Cinnamon has been said to have pharmacological effects in the treatment of type II diabetes and insulin resistance. However, this has yet to be proven in clinical trials.

Traditionally, it has been used to treat toothaches and fight bad breath and its regular use is believed to aid digestion.

* Velvet Vintage uses cinnamon in a number of recipes which include:-

• Apple & Cinnamon Cake RM 40/kg
• Sujee Spice Cake RM 45/lb
• Festive Sujee Fruit Cake RM 45/lb
• Rich Fruit Cake RM 45/lb

Tea Break at the Malaysian Business Network Gathering

After much planning and thinking of a menu, I finally had things cooked and was on my way to the Malaysian Business Network meet up on Saturday, 11 April.

I shared my car with two trays of tuna sandwiches, a tray of cocktail sausages and three cakes. together with Sonia. She was the most helpful thing!

As food sponsor of the tea break, I was given 5 minutes to speak about my business. I told the audience about how I've loved baking since I was 14 years old and would sometimes phone up my grand-aunt for tips. I also mentioned the start of this blog and highlighted some of my special cakes and plans for future business growth.

Speaking about Velvet Vintage at the Malaysian Business Network gatheringMy 5-minute presentation

It was a great opportunity to build contacts with other small business owners and learn from them too. I'm also glad to know that my food was appreciated and packed by some to be taken home :).

After the event, Sonia and I missed three U-turns heading back to Petaling Jaya, (the event was in Cheras and I've never driven there before!) so we decided to bring the food over to my Aunt Jasmine's place. Once the food was almost polished off, we headed back to our place to prepare for Easter Mass.

It was a tiring day, but I must say it was awesome fun!

Happy Easter, all. Have a blessed year ahead.

Chocolate Muffins

I have decided to try out today a batch of rich chocolate muffins, topped with chocolate icing and chocolate spirals. Talk about a chocolate overload!

Now it may seem as though I have overdone it with the chocolate but I'll share a little secret with you.. I'm going to use dark bittersweet chocolate in this recipe so as to not create a sickeningly sweet after taste. I trust that this will work as this is a prized recipe I found in my home after much digging around.

Come back soon to find out how they turned out.
